Wendy the Owl Free Crochet Pattern

Materials:

• Aran/ medium/ size #4 weight yarn
  • 3 oz
  • 5 colors
• US G (4.00 mm) hook
• Stuffing
• Yarn needle
• Buttons (optional)

Gauge

• 16 scs x 14 rows = 4″

Terms/stitches used:

• ch: chain
• slip st: slip stitch
• st: stitch
• sc: single crochet
• spike sc: spike single crochet
• hdc: half double crochet
• sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
• picot: picot
• dc: double crochet
• htr: half treble crochet

  

Notes:

• This pattern is worked from the bottom up and the eyes, wings and beak are all worked separately and then added to the main body later.
• The main body, eyes, and wings are worked in the round with a slip st into the first st of the row. The beak is worked back and forth in rows.
• The ch-1 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.
• The spike single crochet is only worked in the previous row from the current row you’re on.
• Color A is bright green, color B is dark green, color C is medium green, color D is white, and color E is orange (on the green owl).
• Rotate on rows 5 – 7 means rotate the whole piece 90°.

Finished dimensions:

• Height: (top of ears) 7.5” – 8”, main body: 7” – 7.5”
• Width: (diameter) 8” (at widest), 6” (at narrowest)

Pattern instructions:

-Body-

Row 1: A: Ch 17, sc in second ch from hook and all the way across – 16 scs
Rows 2 – 4: A: Turn, ch 1, sc across – 16 scs
The next row will be worked all the way around the rectangle you made for Rows 2 – 4.
Row 5: A: Ch 1, sc across (16 sts), rotate 90 degrees, sc into the next 2 row ends, sc twice into the next row end, sc once into the next row end (5 sc), rotate 90 degrees and sc along the other side of Row 1 (16 sc), rotate 90 degrees and sc into the next row end, sc twice into the next row end, sc into the last row end (5 sc), slip st into the first st to secure – 42 scs
Row 6: A: Ch 1, * sc into next st, sc twice into next st *  repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 63 scs
Rows 7 – 9: A: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 63 scs
Row 10: A: Ch 1,* sc into the next 8 sts, skip next st,* repeat from * to * the rest of the way around (note: this means you will be skipping the last st of the row and slip stitching to the first sc), slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs (the skipped sts count as a decrease here and throughout, if you’d like to replace it with a sc2tog, feel free)
Rows 11 – 13: A: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Fasten off color A, switch to color B.
Row 14: B: Ch 1, * sc into next st, spike sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Row 15: B: Ch 1, *spike sc into next st, sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure –  56 scs
Drop color B, switch to color C.
Rows 16 – 17: C: Repeat rows 14 – 15
Drop color C, switch to color B.
Row 18: B: Repeat row 14
Fasten off color B, switch to color C.
Row 19: C: Repeat row 15
Fasten off color C, switch to color A.
Rows 20 – 21: A: Repeat rows 14 – 15
Row 22: A: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 56 scs
Row 23: A: Ch 1, *sc into next 6 sts, skip next st, * repeat from * to * the rest of the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure- 48 scs
Rows 24 – 26: A: Ch 1, sc all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs
Fasten off color A, switch to color B.
Row 27: B: ch 1, * sc into next st, spike sc into next st * repeat from * to * all the way around, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs

Drop color B, switch to color C.

Row 36: A: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, ch 14, skip the next 14 sts, sc into the next 10 sts, ch 14, skip the next 14 sts, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs, 28 chs
Rows 37 – 39: A: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, ch 14, skip the ch-14 space, sc into the next 10 sts, ch 14, skip the ch-14 space, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs, 28 chs
Row 40: A: Ch 1, sc into the next 5 sts, sc around the chs from the last 4 rows and into the 14 skipped sts on row 36, sc into the next 10 sts, sc around the chs from the last 4 rows and into the 14 skipped sts on row 36, sc into the next 5 sts, slip st into the first sc to secure – 48 scs

-Eyes–
Notes: Make two.

Row 1: D: Magic circle, sc 8 times into it – 8 scs
Row 2: D: Ch 1, sc into same st as join, sc twice into next st, *sc into the next st, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure- 12 scs
Row 3: D: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc once into the next st, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 16 scs
Row 4: D: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 3 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 20 scs
Row 5: D: Ch 1, sc twice into the same st as join, sc once into the next 4 sts, *sc twice into the next st, sc once into the next 4 sts,* repeat from * to * twice more, slip st into the first sc to secure – 24 scs
Fasten off color D, switch to color A.
Row 6: A: pull up a loop at join, ch 2, spike sc into next st, sc into the next st, ch 1, *spike sc into the next st, sc into the next st, ch 1,*  repeat from * to * 5 more times, slip st into the first sc to secure – 12 scs, 12 spike scs

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to secure your eyes to the body of your owl. Before you attach the eyes, be sure to attach buttons. You could also use puffy paint or yarn instead of the buttons. Sew the eyes to the top, near the spike sc rows.

– Wings –

Notes: Make two.

Row 1: A: Ch 7, sc into second stitch from the hook – 6 scs
Row 2: A: Ch 1, turn, sc into next 6 sts, rotate, 3 sc into the end, rotate, sc down the back of row 1 (6 sc), rotate, 3 sc into the next end, slip st into the first sc to secure- 18 scs
Row 3: A: Ch 1, sc twice into the same st as join, *sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to *  16 more times, slip st into the first sc – 36 scs
Drop color A, switch to color C.
Row 4: C: ch 1, sc into the same st as join and into each st around, slip st into the first sc  -36 scs
Fasten off color C, switch to color A.
Row 5: A: ch 1, sc into the first st, spike sc into the next st, *sc into the next st, spike sc into the next st,* repeat from * to * 7 more times, slip st into the first st  – 36 scs
Fasten off color A, switch to color B.
Row 6: B: Ch 1, sc into the same st as join, sc into the next st, sc twice into the next st, *sc once into the next 2 sts, sc twice into the next st,* repeat from * to * 10 more times, slip st into the first st  – 48 scs
Fasten off color B, switch to color C.
Row 7: C: skip 7 sts from join, slip st, sc into the next 3 sts, hdc into the next 4 sts, dc into next 3 sts, htr into next st, picot, htr into next st, dc into next 3 sts, hdc into next 4 sts, sc into next 3 sts, slip st into next st – 22 sts.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to secure your wing to the body of your owl. Sew the wings to the sides with the tips angled inward.

– Beak –

Row 1: E: Ch 7, sc into second ch from hook and into next 2 chs, sc2tog next two chs – 4 scs
Row 2: E: Turn, ch 1, sc into first two sts, sc2tog last two scs – 3 scs
Row 3: E: Turn, ch 1, sc into first st, sc2tog last two scs – 2 scs
Row 4: E: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog – 1 sc
Row 5: E: Turn, ch 1, sc- 1 sc

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Use the beak to secure your wing to the body of your owl.

Finishing: Secure the buttons to the eyes, you could also use puffy paint or yarn instead of the buttons. Sew the eyes to the top, near the spike sc rows. Sew the wings to the sides with the tips angled inward.
